WHAT IS FINISHED?

WHAT IS FINISHED?

By Rick Mathes

Jesus commissioned the Holy Spirit to carry on until He returned. It to Him we seek God’s works by grace in us. As Christians, sold out and totally committed to our returning King we have had our vanity transformed into humility. Once we understood His atonement for our sins on the cross we dropped to our knees, put our faces in the mud, the blood and the tears and cried out, “It is finished!” Our old self died.

In the deepest humility we have an earnestness of purpose that only God knows where it came from. It sure hasn’t been natural since we accepted Him in our head and heart as Savior and Lord.

Because of His finished work we are now friends of God. Can you get a handle on that? We are not at enmity with the Lord of our universe but rather personal friends of His now. We can walk into His presence and be more than welcomed at any time we want to. Imagine that for a moment.

We have been declared righteous. This is not a righteousness of our own but one imputed by Christ’s death on the cross. He took our rap-sheet (list of crimes) with Him. Our record is spotless. God will not even know we ever sinned! Isn’t that something? It is finished! I know that because we have been rescued from sin. The devil hasn’t got his claws in us because we are friends of God.

The cell door has come off of its hinges and the bars have been sawn asunder. We have been set free from the power, punishment and will soon be set free from the presence of sin.

How proud can we be when the Lord stepped from the tomb and Satan knew he was finished. Now like a junk-yard dog, he’s trying to take down every Christian he can until he is thrown into the lake of fire.

We have been chosen of god and predestines to be in that parade when the Lord comes back and reins forever. We who are born again will lift up our hands and shout, “Only you O Lamb or God are worthy!”

WHAT IS FAITH?

WHAT IS FAITH?

By Rick Mathes

Faith is not a power you appropriate, it is an assurance you grow into for the certainty of things hoped for and not seen. We just don’t pull up to the Holy Spirit and get a fill-up. In Christ we always have a full charge but we control the dimmer switch in us. We can turn its power up or down as we choose to.

Our arsenal is stocked with weapons that are to eradicate or at least seriously cripple our arch enemy, pride. Untamed pride left to grow exponentially was the fall of the Angel of Light Lucifer. He swelled up in his imagined egotism, armed with an ultimate high of narcissism, he challenged Jesus and with just a Word our Lord sent him to planet earth like a flaming meteor; a fallen star that would never return to its orbit of prominence in the endless sea of God’s glory.

There is no greater God-pleasing gift but faith. This is the hinge that opens all the doors of spiritual knowledge and hope. It’s not a blind leap of faith but rather a certain absolute. We may not understand all of God’s actions or purposes in our life but by faith in His Word and the unbending assurance of its absolute reliability, owe appropriate more and more faith the closer we draw to Him and see His truths materialize, even those that defy our natural understanding. Strong faith pleases Jesus.

You were created for a purpose and God has a vision for your life that con only come to fruition by appropriating more faith and doing spiritual weight lifting. A steady diet of His Word will ignite your faith to blossom and to explode in revelation of who you are in Him your mind had never before even imagined. I challenge you to unleash the faith of God in you, get out of the boat and walk on the water!

I know it can be done. I have been out there in the midst of those sometimes terrifying waves for many decades.

It’s so simple and I must add easy: Just listen to the teaching and the guidance of the Holy Spirit, Let god be God and step out in faith, face to face with the new you in His image and likeness, not yours.

WHAT HAPPENED?

WHAT HAPPENED?

By Rick Mathes

Being a Christian naturally expects that you will be Christ-like. Mahatma Gandhi once remarked to a priest, “If you would live like a Christian I would be persuaded to be one” He saw through the false veneer of appearance with no substance. The alleged Christians didn’t walk their talk. In fact statistically professing Christians and non-believer can’t be identified because both have the same sins of pornography, adultery, divorces, crime, drunkenness, drug addiction, etc. Whatever happened to the light that was on the hill?

My blood-father gave his life for his country in WWII to preserve the Judeo-Christian values our country was founded on. All I have left is a purple heart and the flag that draped his casket and a country the God has all but left. What ever happened?

Did you know that South Korea is funding missionaries to come to America and tell us about the saving power of Christ’s death on the cross? The problem I see does not originate from carnal Christians it begins in the pulpits that are teeming with demons.

The Gospel According to Jesus is just not being preached but in a few hold-out churches that are watching their Wednesday night prayer nights die and their membership rush for the nearest entertainment center with a cross on the top.

The objectives sermons should contain and don’t are:

  • Death to sin
  • End of injustice
  • Chasing away of error
  • Truth of God
  • Increase of love
  • Return of gentleness
  • Peace among all men

So ask yourself as you stand on your holy ground, “How can I relieve the distressed, help the weary, cheer the saddened, and sweeten the love in your home?”

We must be one in Christ and preach from any pulpit that will have us. Whatever happened to “Repent, the Kingdom of God is near?” It must start now because our day of accounting is close.

WALKING DEAD

WALKING DEAD

By Rick Mathes

The funeral home was plain, quiet and respectful and the silence was broken only with the sobs and cries of family and friends at my Dad’s last moment on earth before he was planted in the earth. I remember the flag that draped his casket and the rifle shots at the cemetery. It had taken years to ship his body back from Belgium and I stood as a 5 year only soldier, saluting him for the last time. He gave his life so that his “Butch” could have life protected by the Constitution and Bible he loved so dearly. Now that is all gone. I’m in the winter of my life and I miss my Dad.

It staggers my mind how man of “us” there must be: millions?

I have been blessed with three score and ten of that freedom he gave his life to in WWII but where is the return on all the lives invested in Vietnam, Korea, Iraq and Afghanistan?  Post-traumatic stress disorder is rampant and so are suicides of those valiant soldiers: 20 per day! Why?

Middle-East conflict is just the point of the spear. The real problem is the fallen angel that wields the weapons of eternal death in the yawning pit of welcoming flames he has labeled “Heaven.” Satan is a full-throttle war with believers and is not holding anything back. He is evil personified

Lucifer’s temptations to self-destruction seduce this fine, young Americans and allies to take their lives so as to end their nightmares of death, beheading, child mutilations and worse. Their minds are a playground of the devil’s insanities that drive them to destroy their lives to end the seemingly endless horror of memories that would drive even the elect to despair if the Holy Spirit wasn’t there to rescue us from certain damnation.

The sign of the times only points one way: go back to your old sins, fighting evil if futile. Evil trumps God’s goodness and truth. And sadly, too many buy into this lie and sacrifice their lives as the seal of their abandonment of any god.

Let this serve as a life saver: To think Jesus is Lord is not enough. To live Him is your only salvation! It’s going to get worse so let this be a warning that you need to ask yourself: “How deep is your love?” Is it as deep at His?

There is no “Plan B” after your last heartbeat. Think of the consequences if you choose wrongly.

TWO ARE ONE?

TWO ARE ONE?

By Rick Mathes

What is the best explanation you can come up with to explain the Trinity? The egg shell, the white and yellow yoke? I’m sure you can do better than that. Here’s a few I have read or heard about over the years. I’m sure there are more that you can add.

The Father is the lover, the Son is the loved and the Holy Spirit is the love between them.

The Father is the sun, the Son is the illumination and the Holy Spirit is the warmth between them.

How about ice, water and steam? (Really poor!)

Try light, heat and air that need each other to exist and cannot exist apart from each other?

My favorite is one times, one equals one.

I’ve come to the conclusion that the Triune Godhead is a concept we will never understand completely. All we can rely on is that the Trinity is clearly taught in the Word of God and the ancient Fathers, Puritans and Calvinists agree to this moment which leads me to think about man made in God’s image and likeness. Try this one on.

Man is also a trinity of mind, soul and spirit which I believe survives the physical death of the body and in the last days will be rejoined in the new eternal body we will enjoy in eternity. So I have been studying the Word now every day because I really believe we take our mind’s knowledge with us. I have focused all these years on the Word and Works of Christ. It is called Christology, the study of Christ.

This has led me to think about my marriage to Trish. The Word teaches that we are complete when the two of us become one in marriage and divorce is never an option except for a partners infidelity. Ummm! The two shall become one in the covenant of marriage.

He Word teaches that there won’t be marriage in heaven. I can’t help but hope and expect that my wife and I will be one soul in glory. It makes sense to me that the Trinity of God can be three, and the trinity of man can be three and the trinity of marriage can be two in one, surely the completeness of husband and wife in His image and likeness.

What God close in eternity for two to be enjoined as one in the covenant of marriage will certainly continue in heaven? Just wondering: won’t you join me in this happy thought?

TOM AND JERRY

TOM AND JERRY

By Rick Mathes

The joy of birthing was a double blessing to the exhausted mother, having given birth to two healthy sons. Identical twins! They were so similar that a ribbon was placed around little Jerry’s wrist so that his daddy could tell which one Tom was.

In time they were snuggled in at home and differing characteristics began to be obvious. Jerry was always happy, ate well and slept through the night, while Tome was cranky, had colic and cried all through the night. As years passed by and kindergarten began, Jerry was buddies with everyone and happily shared his toys while Tom was constantly fighting and hitting his playmates with anything handy. Soon the pre-teen time arrived with Jerry attending Bible studies and praying for Tom. Meanwhile, Tom had lost his virginity, was stealing and smoking crack. Well into the young adult years, Jerry became a church youth leader while Tom was selling drugs, pimping for whores and carrying a pistol. Jerry soon graduated from college, started a family and was a respected deacon in his church, still continuing to pray daily for Tom to be born again.

The contrast in their lives grew even sharper as Tom’s drug addiction caused him to begin a crime spree of robbing and killing innocent bystanders.

One night the police received a tip that Tom was planning to hold up a crack house so they sent two armed policemen to apprehend him while the crime was in progress. Tom crashed through the door, shot the drug dealer dead and filled his pockets with all the dope and cash he could carry. But as he turned to leave the two cops burst through the doorway with pistols drawn. Tom shot them both dead and escaped on a motorcycle he had parked nearby. He was not a cop-killer!

The syndicate and police were both after him dead or alive, either one would do. He had made the top tem most wanted list! Tom robbed, shot and killed his way across the country with nowhere to go, not even to his heroin sources. Exhausted, yellow eyed, shaking and deathly sick, lost in the swampy woods, he put the barrel of his gun into his mouth. “I’ll never hear the bang,” he thought. At that moment he remembered his only friend in the whole world, his brother Jerry.

Determined to see his brother one last time, he found renewed strength to sleep by day and hitchhike by nightfall, finally reaching his brothers home late one evening.

Jerry was startled by the midnight knocking on his back door. Cautiously, he looked out and faintly saw his long lost brother Tom! He threw open the door to greet what was left of the twin brother he once knew. Tom had become almost toothless, skin and bone, vomiting blood. Jerry helped him to the shower, scrubbed him down and then led him back to the kitchen in fresh pajamas, to a hot meal his wife had prepared and then slipped away so they could be alone together.

There they sat at the kitchen table. Tom and Jerry. Darkness and light. Identical twins.

Tom poured out his heart as Jerry intently listened and silently prayed for Tom’s salvation as he had done so countless times over the years. Meal completed and in a flood of tears, the brothers knelt on that had wood floor and Tom asked Jesus to be the Lord of his life. True, heartfelt repentance. The Angels were rejoicing at this extraordinary trophy for the Lord.

Jerry made a bed for Tom on the living room couch and Tom settled down to the first good nights sleep he had had in months. As the morning dawned, Tom awoke and panic stricken could not find his brother Jerry anywhere in the house. Jerry’s wife said, “He went to see your judge.”

The judge! Tom’s mind went ballistic. The judge was the last human on earth that he would ever want to meet up with. The “Hanging Judge” had vowed not to retire until he convicted Tom and personally watched him die by hanging! No one on earth hated Tom more than the Judge. And Jerry, his twin brother, had gone to see him. Blind with confusion and terror, Tom quickly dressed and drove their second car to the courthouse. The last place on earth Tom could ever dream of going was into the private chambers of the judge. A nightmare come true. But that was exactly what he did as he pushed the secretary aside and burst his way through the thick oak double doors.

The silver haired Magistrate was seated at his large imposing hand carved desk, head on arms as Tom shrieked, “Where is my brother?” He continued, “I’m finally here. I’m Tom, the cop-killer you vowed to hang!” All the slump shouldered old judge could manage to say at this point was, “Oh, my God. Oh, my God no!” Tom shook the judge as he demanded, “Where is my brother Jerry? Tell me right now!”

The judge began calmly, “Around 3am I was summoned to the court room because your brother Jerry had surrendered himself to the authorities. You both are perfectly identical twins, you know. I convened court, found him guilty of first degree murder as charged and he was executed by hanging less than an hour ago.”

Tom broke down screaming and crying, “You’ve killed an innocent man for my crimes! I’m the one you want! Hang me!”

The judge replied, “We’ve completely destroyed all of your records. You don’t even have a parking ticket.”

Tom, still dazed replied, “What an I going to do now?”

The haggard old judge thought for a moment and then wisely suggested, “An innocent man was executed in your place. He paid in full for the punishment that you deserve.” He went on, “I would suggest that you live out the rest of your life as Jerry would have lived his life. He died so that you might live. Live you life in memory of him.”

THE UGLIEST MAN

THE UGLIEST MAN

(Author of “Allah or Jesus”)

Two years after my Christian experience at age forty, word quickly spread about my previous life of alcoholism, drug addiction, promiscuity, violence and worse. One day I received a call from the team leader of a few seminary students that had been doing a weekly chapel service at the local county jail. They asked me to connect up with them and give my personal testimony at their next scheduled worship service. I reluctantly accepted and wasn’t too thrilled to be voluntarily going to jail! In my youth, I had been cuffed and locked down five times that I could remember. Being four locked gated deep in an all too familiar jail was not my idea of having a good time, but I would do it for my Jesus. So I went anyway and gave my testimony. The altar was overflowing with repentant prisoners seeking the forgiveness that only Jesus Christ can offer. I felt like I had put my finger into a 220 watt wall socket; an electrifying experience! I continued to frequent these weekly meetings and in time the students eventually graduated and scattered to all parts of the country, pastoring their respective churches. I was left alone and without new seminary students to replenish them.

That first jail service by myself made an unforgettable impression that would change the rest of my life up to this very moment!

The inmates began filing in and the chapel was swollen to overflowing. They were sitting in the aisles, on the steps and across the stage. The thought of a jail break slipped through my mind and maybe I was going to be taken hostage! Almost seventy street-hardened criminals were between me and the only exit from the chapel. Resigned to the task at hand, I had a message to preach. I did, and at the conclusion of the message my eyes were drawn to the last pew, the inside aisle seat closest to the door out. There sat the most ghastly looking convict I have ever seen.

He was like on of those neckless weight-lifters that are so muscle bound that they can’t even bend their arms to comb their hair. He was brown skinned with white splotches scattered about his face and arms. He looked like he had been randomly splashed with bleach or lye. His left eye was missing and you could see twitching beneath the sunken eye-lid. There was a poorly stitched scar that circled his throat from ear to ear and all his front teeth were missing except the two protruding eye teeth. Satan had taken him to hell and back.

Our eyes met in a steely stare with a serenity that suspended time. My blood ran cold as he deliberately got to his feet, kept eye contact and walked down the center aisle directly toward me. I was paralyzed with fear!

When he finally reached me he began to weep, dropping to his knees at my feet, sobbing as deeply as a man is able. I was dazed and startled at this turn of events. I cleared my head and witnessed a sinner seeking a Saviour. The sinner’s prayer ….. finally focused on my purpose …. Lead him to the foot of the Cross … Holding his ugly fact in my two hands, we began speaking in prayer and repentance together. Looking into his battle-raged face, something very extraordinary happened to me!

You can call it hallucination, drug flash-back, or a vivid imagination, but for me it was an unforgettable, supernatural vision.

I looked deep into his grotesque face and I saw the cherished face of Jesus looking back at me. His Word went through my veins like fire; “Whatever you do to these brethren of mine, even the least of them, you have done it to Me.” I was blessing Jesus!

STAND YOUR GROUND

STAND YOUR GROUND

By Rick Mathes

It’s a frightening prospect to watch the late-night news. Violence, insolence, barbarity, and evil as never before witnessed is the standard fare. I suppose it has always been that way but with instant communications as they are, it’s in your face day after day. The world wonders why and the unbelievers go with the flow and sign up with the majority at the expense of morality and good sense. What are we Christians to do?

  1. H. Spurgeon summed up his world view, “I yield to none.” AMEN!

As a Christian I need to take an objective stand, one that doesn’t shift with the blowing sands. There is only one correct doctrine and we’d better know it and plant our flag on it. This is not the time to get experimental as maybe we once were in our youthful moments nor even to handcuff ourselves in practical applications of favorite verses that suit our needs. We need to do spiritual weight lifting and biblical workouts as a daily regimen.

There is no excuse for us to abandon:

  • Bible only
  • Jesus only
  • Grace only and,
  • Faith only.

With this foundation all denominations that are true to the Word of God rest. We may argue over the distinctive. We’ve been doing that since we left Egypt! What else is new? When the going gets tough, the tough get going and we have the assurance that we have each other’s back when that time comes.

Well, that time has come!

We must stand our ground and not yield an inch to the evil one nor his fallen angels. If you have eyes, you must see the times are upon us to unite and lift up the Cross of Christ in one accord. Now is not the time to re-arrange the deck chairs, hold lengthy debates, or endless arguments over doctrinal differences. We desperately need to stand on the Rock that doesn’t roll.

Don’t mess with my Lord, my wife nor my family of believers. This is the line I draw in the sand and if you cross it, you have crossed me and I am battle ready. I have on the armor and I have the sword of the Word lifted in honor of my King. Won’t you join me?

SAY WHAT?

SAY WHAT?

By Rick Mathes

Have you ever noticed that you are watching people who are watching people watch people? It’s a fun game to play as you size them up by looks, occupation and temperament. Well, there are roughly four categories to choose from: manlike, beastlike, Satanlike and Christlike. Learn to spot these personalities and you will have a leg-up on communicating with them.

Manlike: This is the “good neighbor” guy that is always falling over backwards to be accepted. This is what I call the good-for-good deeds and he’s a great guy to know: good for good.

Next is the Beastlike character. He is the one that always replies in kind. If you slug him, he will strike a blow back. You stab him and he will shoot you: bad for bad. This is normal in the animal kingdom but civilized people should know better to show restraint but instead we exercise retribution. God said, “Vengeance is mine” and He meant it!

Satanlike is the nastiest personality of all: bad for good. I shudder when I reflect on all the good people I hurt and trampled with no regard for the pain I caused. The devil delights in having you  damage those who love you so when you return love with hate, or bad for good you are in the image and likeness of Father Lucifer himself.

Now is good for good is manlike and bad for bad is beastlike and bad for good is Satanlike, what is Christlike?

That’s right! Good for bad. Jesus called us to love our enemies, turn the other cheek and wash dirty feet. When others get to know us do they get to know the peace and love of our Savior? We may be the only gospel that they will ever encounter. They will know us by our love. We are certainly called to protect our Lord, family and church from the evil one, including war against deadly force but in all other cases we are to return bad with good. Say what? You got to be kidding me.

REMEMBER HIM

REMEMBER HIM

By Rick Mathes

He broke the bread, lifted up the wine and asked His best friends to remember Him. Are you kidding me? How could we possibly do otherwise? Of course, we will remember Him! He is our only salvation form the flaming furnace of Hell and He is the only Life we will ever have because of Him. Oh precious Jesus, how we love and remember you!

When you consider Christ in the Word, to really understand the message there are a few things I would suggest. First, consider who is saying it to whom: not everything in the Word is directed to you and I. Next, ask yourself, “How did their Jewish minds understand this” and lastly, “What is this saying to me.” We need to get into His head and develop the “mind of Christ.”

Jesus had feeling well tuned to ours. When we hurt, He hurt. This is an empathy for others that would do us well to emulate. How do you feel, often greatly influences your actions. For example: when He looked to Jerusalem, He wept. Descriptions of Him that have lasted over the years sate that He was often sad and not seen to laugh or launch in to merriment.

For sure, blessed is every Word that comes from His breath. When I first became a Christian the only words I wanted to read were His. In my Bible they were in read so I was lovingly referred to as a “red letter theologian.” If you read just His words at the speed you are reading these, it only takes three hours to read them all. Consider, I can give you a “knock-dead sermon” and two days later you are looking for the next quick fix of the Holy Spirit. Jesus preached for 3 hours and over two thousand years later we are astonished at His Words!

How can we forget He gave sight to the blind, legs to the cripple, eyes to the blind, life to the dad. His miracles are unforgettable. The greatest reason to remember Him, more than the miracles is His intersession for us.

Can you get your mind around Him interceding for us to the Father? I can imagine it where Jesus approaches the Father and says:

“Daddy, look at my wounds. I allowed them for Rick’s atonement. See the scars on my head and back. They were received in excruciating pain as a punishment for his sins. Don’t miss the sword that pierced my very own heart so that I might die and he might live. Daddy will you let Rick in?”

“Of course, my Son.”
